Sylvia Barnes

Sylvia Barnes is the mother of Steve Barnes, an exoneree who served twenty years in upstate New York for a rape and murder he did not commit. Sylvia never lost faith in her son’s innocence, and advocated tirelessly for his release from prison. Following Steve's exoneration, Sylvia testified before the New York State legislature in support of a bill mandating the recording of police interrogations of suspects charged with serious violent crimes, which was ultimately signed by Governor Cuomo in 2018.
