U.S. citizens Grace Huang and Matthew Huang were wrongly convicted in Qatar in 2013 of starving to death their adopted African born 8-year-old daughter Gloria. An autopsy found that Gloria died of “cachexia (an irreversible loss of body mass) and dehydration” and the Huangs were charged with “murder with intent by forced starvation.” Although Gloria had been suffering from malnutrition-related diseases since her adoption and defense witnesses testified that she appeared relatively healthy days before she died, the Huangs were convicted and sentenced to three years in prison. On November 30, 2014, an appeals court in Qatar overturned the convictions.
